Federal Tax Brackets: Which One Are You In?

The federal tax brackets determine the amount of income taxes you must pay each year. The tax brackets change from time to time, but for the 2009 tax year, the federal tax brackets are as follows:

Filing Status: Single

  • If your taxable income falls between $0 and $8350, you fall into the 10% tax bracket.
  • If your income is between $8350 and $33,950, you fall into the 15% tax bracket.
  • If your income is between $33,950 and $82,250, you fall into the 25% tax bracket.
  • With a taxable income of $82,250 to $171,550 you fall into the 28% tax bracket.
  • If your income is at least $171,550 but less than $372,950, you are in the 33% tax bracket.
  • If your income is higher than $372,950, you fall into the 35% tax bracket.

Filing Status: Married Filing Jointly

  • If your taxable income falls between $0 and $16,700, you are part of the 10% tax bracket.
  • With income between $16,700 and $67,900, you fall into the 15% tax bracket.
  • If your income is at least $67,900 but less than $137,050, you fall into the 25% tax bracket.
  • If your income is at least $137,050 but less than $208,850, you are in the 28% income tax bracket.
  • With an income between $208,850 and $372,950, you fall into the 33% tax bracket.
  • An income higher than $372,950 lands you in the 35% tax bracket.

Filing Status: Married Filing Separately

  • If your taxable income is less than $8,350, you fall into the 10% bracket.
  • With an income of at least $8,350 and less than $33,950, you are in the 15% tax bracket.
  • If your income is at least $33,950, but less than $68,525, you fall into the 25% tax bracket.
  • If your income is between $68,525, and $104,425, you are in the 28% bracket.
  • With an income of $104,425 but less than $186,475, you fall into the 33% tax bracket.
  • An income higher than $186,475 lands you in the 35% bracket.

Filing Status: Head of Household

  • If your taxable income is less than $11,950, you fall into the 10% bracket.
  • With an income of at least $11,950 and less than $45,500, you are in the 15% tax bracket.
  • If your income is at least $45,500, but less than $117,450, you fall into the 25% tax bracket.
  • If your income is between $117,450 and $190,200, you are in the 28% bracket.
  • With an income of $190,200 but less than $372,950, you fall into the 33% tax bracket.
  • An income higher than $372,950 lands you in the 35% bracket.
