Veteran's Benefits: 3 Things to Know before Applying

If you are a former member of the US armed forces, and you want to apply for veterans' benefits, then there are a number of things that you should research before you send in your application. Veterans benefits are sometimes very difficult to achieve, and you need to go through various stages before you can get the money you are entitled to.

Know the Law

Read up on the laws which regulate the veterans benefits system. You should be able to find most of the information that you need allocated to Title 38, United States Code, and the related information on title 38, Code of Federal Regulations. Read all of this information, paying particular attention to the laws which discuss your particular situation.

Know Your Status

You will also need to know your status, which is your eligibility to receive benefits. If you have been assessed by a physician, then they should have given you a disability scale. This is the percentage of disability which you are entitled to claim for, and can run from 10 to 20%, right up to 70 to 100%. The lower your percentage, the lower the amount of benefit you will receive.

Know the VA

The VA is designed to help veterans claim benefits, but they can be a mass of bureaucracy. You may find that you will have to wait to speak to them, and they will not work on your benefits as quickly as you hoped.
