Probate: Duties of the Personal Representative

During the probate process, a personal representative is going to handle a number of things for the estate. Here are some of the duties of the personal representative. The personal representative is going to have to obtain certain documents for the estate. First of all, they will have to obtain a legitimate copy of a will, if one was written. The personal representative is also going to need to get a copy of the death certificate for the deceased individual.

Assets

The personal representative will also have to handle the assets of the estate. They are going to take an inventory of the assets and hire appraisers to determine the value of certain assets. The representative will also have to set up a checking account for the estate.

Pay Bills

They will then have to pay all of the bills for the estate. This could include bills for final expenses, taxes or debts that were owed.

Transfer of Assets

The personal representative will also be in charge of transferring assets to the beneficiaries. This means that they are going to have to locate all of the beneficiaries of the estate. They will then have to distribute assets and cash payments or by giving beneficiaries physical property from the estate.
