The IRA plan  was created by the Internal Revenue Service in order to provide tax payers with the means to save for retirement. IRA stands for individual retirement account. IRA's offer a tax sheltered opportunity to increase retirement savings through investment in the stock market. All of these plans allow the individual to choose investments options based on their personal degree of risk aversion.

There are various types plans available for the individual and most companies offer some sort of IRA based plan to their employees. Most employer plans allow or require the company to match the contributions made by their employees.
