How to Revoke a Power of Attorney

It is not difficult to revoke a power of attorney. What you need to do depends on what powers you have granted your agent (attorney in fact). In most cases you simply write a revocation of power of attorney document. You will need to have the form notarized or witnessed. You can find examples of these documents online. You will need to be careful that you identify yourself, your agent and you must clearly state that you are revoking the power of attorney. You do not need to state a reason in the revocation.

Then, you will need to notify your agent and retrieve your POA, or power of attorney. You should also be sure to notify any third party organizations that your agent was working with. If you granted powers over your real estate, you will need to have a copy of the revocation recorded with land records office in your area. If you are not sure about who your agent was working with, you may need to post the revocation in the local news paper. Also, if something should happen to you or you become incompetent, general and specific POAs are automatically void.
