FAQ for Personal Home Construction

When you are constructing your home, a homeowner may have a few questions. The most common three questions are:

1. What is my first step to building my own home?

The first thing to do is put together a book of ideas for your home. Write down basic things like number of bedrooms/bathrooms, etc. Describe each room and what features you want them to have. Collect pictures of homes that you like.

2. Is it expensive to build my own home?

The answer depends on your financial situation and the type and size of the home you want built. While mobile homes are relatively inexpensive to build a palace or castle may be too expensive. Visit real estate websites and compare prices of homes that are similar to what you are looking to build. This will give you an idea of what it may cost at a minimum.

3. Do I need to work with a builder or contractor?

Yes, unless you are a gifted carpenter, then you will probably need the help of a builder or contractor. So many elements are involved in building a home that it takes a team of professionals from different areas to bring it all together -- carpenters, electricians, plumbers, roofers, etc.

Personal home construction, though it’s not an easy task, can be a very rewarding experience. The end result should be the home you wanted. Take time and gather your ideas, research your options and enlist the help of professionals to bring your dream home to fruition.
