Does Investing in New Carpet or Flooring Pay Off?

Many people think that by replacing their carpet or putting in new flooring, they can get a good return on their investment, but that is not always the case. It depends on what you replace.

Floor Covering vs. Flooring

There are different levels of flooring available. Some floors will permanently be affixed to the subfloor, which will make it part of the structure. This is called flooring and it will add to the value of your home. These types of floors include hardwood and tile.

Floor covering is when you simply cover the floor with something that is not permanent. This type of floor includes carpet, vinyl and laminate flooring. Floor covering will not add any discernible value to your home.

Perception

Even if floor covering is used, it can add to the perceived value of the home. If your carpet looks terrible, then it might be a good idea to replace it. Cleaning might get rid of the stains, but if the carpet is worn out, it will still look bad. This will make the house more presentable and could end up in a quicker sale.
