10 Interview Questions for Real Estate Agents

If you are selling your home, there are 10 questions you need to ask during the real estate interview.  These questions will help you get to know the agent and to determine if he or she will be able to serve your needs. Whether you are looking for a listing agent, selling agent or both, being informed about his or her background and what he or she brings to the table can make a difference in how smoothly your real estate transaction will go. The following ten questions will assist in your selection of an agent.

1. How Long Have You Been in Real Estate?

Knowing an agent's experience and education level is key. Seasoned agents have encountered a variety of situations during their time and know how to assist their clients.

2. Who Comprises Your Team?

It is key to know who all works with your agent. Know which roles they play in assisting him or her and how that affects you.

3. Do You Have References Available?

References provide feedback from others who have worked with the agent. References will allow you to gauge the agent’s work ethics from the client perspective.

4. How Will Communication Be Established?

You need to have contact information such as cell, office, and email numbers to contact your agent. In addition, he or she should have contact information for you. A contingency plan should be established in case he or she is unavailable to assist you.

5. What Is the Payment Schedule for Your Services?

You should know up front what types of fees the agent charges and the time line of when he or she expects payments. These fees should be part of the contract.

6. What Are the Cancellation Procedures?

You will want to know what your responsibilities are should you decide to terminate your working relationship. The agent should outline any documentation and deadlines associated with the termination of the contract.

7. How Will You Market My Home?

How your home will be marketed should be one of the key elements in how you decide on an agent. The marketing plan should incorporate not only print ads but also social media and virtual tours. Your agent wants to cast a wide net to draw in potential buyers.

8. How Familiar Are You With This Area?

An agent who is familiar with your area is able to connect with the surrounding community to bring interest to your property.

9. What Separates You from Other Agents?

This question allows an agent to sell him- or herself to you. You should already have a list of qualities that you are looking for in an agent. Hearing directly from the agent can bring comfort that he or she is what you are looking for.

10. Can I Preview Documents Prior to Signing?

A good agent wants to help you understand the process of selling or purchasing a home. He or she will take the time to go over the documents so you understand what you are signing and how it affects the transaction.
