Supplemental Dental Insurance 101

Supplemental dental insurance is a product that is designed to help you with your dental bills. Having supplemental dental insurance can provide you with extra assistance when it comes to paying for necessary dental services. Here are the basics of supplemental dental insurance and some of the different types that are available.

Supplemental Dental Insurance

Supplemental dental insurance is designed to supplement your existing dental coverage. Many individuals have some type of dental coverage through their employers. You might have some type of dental coverage through your regular health insurance plan. Your employer might also purchase a specific dental plan for the employees. Regardless of which type of coverage you have, there is a good chance that the coverage does not cover everything that you might need. Supplemental dental insurance is designed to fill in the gaps presented by traditional dental coverage. If your employer purchased one of the least expensive dental plans available, there is a good chance that you will need some type of supplemental dental insurance to cover many different services.

Dental Discount Plans

If you are in the market for supplemental dental insurance, you might want to consider using a dental discount plan. While a dental discount plan is not technically a form of insurance, it can help with dental costs significantly. The idea behind a dental discount plan is simple. You purchase a dental discount plan from one of the many plan providers in the market. You can then use this plan with any of the dentists that accept it. Dentists often prefer to accept this type of plan because it is simple, and there is not much paperwork. With dental insurance, the dentist has to file complicated paperwork in order to get paid. Once the dentist files the paperwork with the insurance company, it could be up to 90 days before he or she gets paid. With the dental discount plan, customers have to pay for their services in cash at the time of service. This helps dentists with their cash flow and allows them to cut back on paperwork.

Student Dental Plans

Another type of supplemental dental insurance is the student dental plan. Many colleges and universities offer dental plans for their students. Many times, these plans will be drastically discounted and will help cover the costs of basic services such as cleaning and X-rays.

PPO Dental Plan

Another type of supplemental dental insurance to consider is a PPO dental plan. This type of plan is affordable for individuals or families in most cases. With this type of plan, you can choose a dentist from a list of providers in the PPO network. When you get a service done, the PPO insurance plan is going to pay a flat rate for that service. You will then have to pick up the rest of the bill on your own.
