Obtaining Medicare Supplemental Health Insurance

If you qualify for Medicare, you have access to some good health care benefits. However, Medicare Supplemental Health Insurance plans are necessary to fill in the coverage gaps. Depending on which Medicare plan you choose, there are certain things that will not be covered. This is where supplemental insurance can come in and help fill the gap. In order to obtain supplemental health insurance, you will have to take a few necessary steps.

Shop Around

There are several policies out there that are designed to supplement Medicare. If you really want to get the best deal, you will need to shop around and ask questions. Figure out exactly what your potential policy will cover before buying it. Many people are fooled by policies that have maximum benefits and are left with a large medical bill.

Medical Exam

Most health insurance policies will require you to take a medical examination prior to your acceptance. This is a normal part of the process and should be expected. Be honest when you complete the paperwork so that you don’t run into any problems in the future.

Waiting Period

Once you get your new policy, be prepared to go through a waiting period. There aren't many policies that allow you to sign up and then immediately start processing claims. Some of them have a 30 day or 90 day waiting period. Be aware of any of these policies before you go to the doctor.
