Is Pet Insurance Worth It?

We love our pets, but sometimes we wonder, is pet insurance worth it? Sure, pet insurance is yet another expense that you may be tempted to forego, but before you dismiss it automatically, consider these points.

  • Accidents -- Your cat or dog may get hit by a car, or injure itself in a fall.  Accidents can be very costly.  When you figure in the X-rays, bone setting, surgery, medicines, veterinary hospital stays and rehabilitation, the bottom line can be thousands of dollars.
  • Medical expenses quickly add up -- Liver, kidney, heart, respiratory problems, cancer and other diseases can befall your pet, just as they can with humans.  These expenses can wipe out your bank account if you don't have insurance.  Is pet insurance worth it in this case?  Do you have an extra $3,500 to $5,000 for an expensive medical procedure that you can pay out of pocket?
  • Veterinary bills can be prohibitive – After annual vaccinations and exams, a tidy expense in and of themselves, costs for specialized treatment, referrals, surgeries, diagnostic tests, special medicines quickly add up. It’s not unusual for fees to approach that of medical care for humans.  Protect your pet with pet insurance. It's worth it.
