Homeowners' Insurance: How to Get Your Policy Renewed

There are some basics to ensuring that your homeowners’ insurance policy gets renewed. As more cancellation and non-renewal letters are being issued, it’s important to know the dos and don’ts of keeping your policy intact.

Dos

Pay your premiums on time. Paying your bill on time not only affects your credit, but determines how much your insurance company will charge you for the policy.

Raise your deductible. If you raise the deductible, your insurance company will be less vulnerable to claims. This will reduce your risk of receiving a non-renewal notice if a claim is filed. In addition, you will save money because your premium will decrease.

Stay with one company for all your insurance. Consolidating all of your insurance coverage (home, auto, life) with one company will make you a more valuable policyholder.

Don’ts

Don’t file for an insurance claim unless your loss is substantial. A home seller's history of insurance claims is going to affect whether the policy will be renewed.

Don’t call your insurance agent to discuss a small claim. Even talking to your agent could count against your record.

Don’t neglect basic home maintenance. This will prevent claims, and insurance companies may also offer discounts if you keep your home in good repair.

When you are deciding to file a claim, a general rule of thumb is that if the damage is less than $1,000, you should think twice about contacting your insurance company.
