Health Care Benefits - Medicare Coverage

Medicare is available for Americans that are at least 65 years of age. The benefits Medicare provides differ depending on which plan you have. Medicare Part A is something that everyone that has worked for 10 years will qualify for as free benefits. For additional benefits, you can get Medicare Part B for a small cost.

Medicare Part A

Medicare Part A is referred as hospital insurance and covers the large ticket items. There are no premiums for part A Medicare if you are over 65. Part A Medicare covers most costs, but you will be responsible for a small portion of the bill. The longer you are in the hospital, the more you will have to pay. If you are in the hospital for less than 60 days, you will probably pay less than $1000.

Skilled nursing facilities, hospice care and home care are also covered. However, if you have a short stay in a skilled nursing facility or require home care, Medicare will cover it. It also will help you pay for any blood that you need while you are in these facilities.

Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B covers is known as the medical insurance part of Medicare. It covers a wider array of medical needs. This part of Medicare requires a monthly premium and a small yearly deductible. However, the benefits that you receive from it are well worth the cost. For example, your doctor visits would be covered under this plan as well as any medical tests. This would include any CT scans, MRI's, or X-rays.

Outpatient services and surgery is another big thing that Part B covers. More and more surgeries can be done on an outpatient basis, so this benefit alone is well worth the small price of the premiums. Physical therapy is also covered. After you have an injury or surgery, physical therapy is often required. You might have to go for months before you get back to where you need to be. After several trips to the physical therapists, the bill can add up quickly.

Preventive services are also covered under Medicare Part B. This is a vital aspect of health coverage as it can help you to prevent serious conditions in the future. You can be tested for diabetes, breast cancer and prostate cancer. They will perform bone mass tests as well as cardiovascular tests. These essential tests and many others are covered for free under Medicare Part B.

Other Medicare Programs

Medicare also offers a few other programs, some of the most popular are Part C and D. Part C offers a combination of Medicare Parts A, B and D. Part D Medicare covers prescription drugs. Drug coverage is very important because medication can be very expensive.

You may also be eligible for Medicare Part A if you are under 65 with certain conditions. You can apply at your local social security office and find out more details about enrollment.
