Getting A Low Car Insurance Rate In 3 Steps

You can obtain low car insurance just by being knowledgeable about the process of finding an appropriate plan. Follow these three easy steps and you'll find the car insurance you need in no time.

Step 1 - Shop Around

Do not settle for the first quote you come across.  Rather, you should be prepared to shop around a bit, talking to several car insurance companies before deciding which one is the best.  You can do this research in person, on the phone, or online.  Some online websites, such as Progressive or Esurance, allow you to compare quotes from different companies so that you can visually see price differences.   Do not forget to also look at discrepancies between the policies, not just price differences.  If you have any questions about a policy, make sure to ask a representative and never sign a policy until you fully understand it.

Step 2 - Finding Discounts

Taking advantage of discounts available to you is a great way to lower your car insurance rate.  Some discounts will be derived straight from the type of car you drive and your own history as a driver; for example, the type of car you own, the safety and anti-theft devices on your car, the number of accidents you have been involved in, the number of traffic or speeding tickets you have received, your credit history, and where you live can all help lower your car insurance rate.

Step 3 - Finding More Discounts

There are many more discounts that can lower your car insurance rate.  You can get these discounts in the following ways:
  • Are you a member of AAA?  Members of AAA or other professional organizations are often eligible for auto insurance discounts.
  • If you are a homeowner or renter, find an insurance company that covers both your home and your car.  Having one company cover both of these policies will typically lead to a discount on one or both.
  • If you have a low-risk profession in the eyes of the insurance company, you may qualify for a discount.   Also, teachers often get special discounts, too.
  • If you are insuring a student, some companies offer discounts for students who make good grades and display excellence in school.
  • If you insure more than one car, ask if the company offers a family plan, or a discount for insuring multiple cars.
  • Try to eliminate billing or processing fees by paying your bill electronically.
