Dealing with an Car Accident - Insurance Details

Getting car accident insurance is required by law and is essential to maintaining your financial well-being. Driving without insurance is bad enough that you can be fined or thrown in jail because of it. Therefore, obtaining it should be at the top of your priority list. Once you have a wreck, it can be a confusing experience without the proper guidance. If you have a good auto policy, your insurance company will be able to help you through the process. Here are a few tips to help you deal with a car accident.

Report the Claim Immediately

Some people fear what would happen to them if they reported an auto claim that was their fault. They try to do everything that they can to get out of filing it. Regardless of how you feel about the situation, you should always report a claim immediately. If you are in an accident and leave the scene before everything can be sorted out, you are breaking the law. Therefore, you should always make a phone call to the police and to your insurance company for serious accidents. You gain nothing by waiting to report an accident claim. Just make the phone call and save yourself a lot of trouble.

Who to Call

While you know you need to report the claim immediately, some people are confused as to who they need to call. Most insurance companies now have a toll free helpline that you can report claims to 24 hours a day. They usually post this information on your insurance card and you can refer to right in your car after an accident occurs. If you do not have a helpline with your insurance company, simply call your insurance agent. They will be able to direct you to the right place to file your claim with or they may file it themselves.

Follow Directions

When you call in to a helpline, the claims rep on the other end of the phone will be able to help you get things going. They will often have a procedure that they want you to follow. It is critical that you do exactly what they tell you to do. They may have a certain body shop that they want you to take your car to. If so, you need to do exactly what they tell you. Working within the rules makes it much easier to get the insurance company to do what you need done.

Follow Up

During the claims process, you need to follow up on the status of your claim throughout. Some insurance companies are really good about checking back with you through the process to let you know how things are going. Others are not so good. They will likely want to send one of their adjusters to inspect the car and possibly the crash site. They will file a report that tells the company exactly what should be paid for the claim. If you don't hear back from the company after a few days, don't be afraid to call them and check up on the process.
