What Does The Income Tax Office Do?

An income tax office is an office maintained by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that is designed to provide information for taxpayers.  It is the duty of an income tax office to make available forms and other publications of the IRS useful for the preparation of an annual or other periodic tax filing. An income tax office can also provide information about the IRS tax code and how certain provisions may impact a taxpayer.

What is the Income Tax Office?

It is not the role of an income tax office to give tax advice or prepare tax returns for taxpayers.  The income tax office is a clearinghouse for information that a taxpayer can access when questions arise concerning their tax filing status.

Are Returns Processed at an Income Tax Office?

It should be further noted that the income tax office does not process returns or refunds for taxpayers. This information typically comes from a regional tax office that is set up based on the taxpayer’s residence. In many cases, the office where forms are processed and refunds mailed is several states away from the area in which the taxpayer is located.
