In the United States, homeowners are typically required to pay property tax to their state and county. Some municipalities only require property tax payment to one or the other, and even fewer require no property tax. However, most homeowners should be aware of the two main property tax resources available to them.
1. State and/or County Administrations
The first resource available to every taxpayer is their state and/or county administration. The property tax department in most states is under the state's Department of Revenue or an equivalent division of the state government. County administrations are much smaller, and taxpayers usually pay property tax directly to the county. If a homeowner has fallen behind on taxes and needs assistance, they can file for a hardship reduction of their property taxes, and/or set up a payment plan that they can afford.
2. Elected Representatives
United States voters should remember that their elected representatives work for them. If they are having trouble paying property taxes, they can always contact their elected representatives for assistance. In the county, this is usually a county executive. On the state level, this would be their state representatives and/or senators. These people can intercede on your behalf, and can help you decrease the amount of taxes you owe or to set up a payment plan that you can afford.
