A free tax day or free tax weekend can save you quite a bit of money. The free tax day is a program set up by individual states to allow those needing to get school supplies a break on the price. The idea is to save money by eliminating the sales tax. This benefits not only the consumer, but it is designed to be a boost to retailers in the community as well. A lot of this will depend on the state you live in and the restrictions associated. In general though, most people can save at least a few bucks by taking advantage of this. Here’s how.
Check Online
You can either go to your states government website or just do an internet search for tax free shopping to find when your state does this. In most cases it’s sometime in August to help parents defray the cost of school supplies. Some states will designate one tax free shopping day, and others will designate an entire weekend. If you live in a state that doesn’t have the tax free holiday, you may live close enough to another to make a drive to save money on your large purchases.
Restrictions and Exclusions
If you live in North Carolina you will be restricted to clothing and school supplies under $100, computers under $3500, and office equipment under $250 if you take advantage of the tax free weekend in August. If you want to purchase appliances you will want to wait for the appliance tax free weekend in November. If you end up purchasing a computer for $2000 you will end up saving as much as $170 on the purchase. This can add up and can mean a lot to most people.
So far there are 20 states who participate in some kind of tax free holiday. They will all have different restrictions and dates. By checking in to this you can save your family quite a bit of money by postponing major purchases until these days.
