How Do Hybrid Vehicle Tax Credits Work?

You can receive a tax credit for a hybrid vehicle through federal incentive programs. Many states also offer advantages of driving hybrids like use of the high occupancy vehicle lane or free parking meters. In terms of receiving your government tax credit, you will be eligible for anywhere from $400 to $4,000 based on the government's rating of your vehicle. You need to supply the following information to redeem your credit:

  • Name, address and tax identification number of the manufacturer

  • Make model and vehicle identification information

  • The type of credit your car qualifies for

  • The dollar amount of that credit - show your computations

  • Weight and inertia weight class of the vehicle - ask the dealer for this

  • City fuel economy

  • Certificate for vehicle emissions standards test

  • Statement that the vehicle complies with: air quality control laws, motor vehicle safety provisions, uses hybrid technology, meets the low emissions standard

These are most of the requirements needed to claim your tax credit. Your dealer should be able to provide you with the forms and necessary contact information to get the tax credit. Some dealers will offer to submit the forms for you in an effort to get you to purchase the car.
