Income tax filing time is stressful, so many former IRS employees now offer free tax advice. They have teamed up and offer their services through volunteer agencies like VITA and TCE. Here's how they can help you if you are a low-income or moderate-income taxpayer, or just have specific tax questions:
- Volunteers with VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) will prepare your income tax return for you at no charge, and send it in electronically, if your pre-tax income is at or less than $30,000 per year. Free IRS tax advice is available to all taxpayers through VITA. Let them check your return forms before you file. All volunteers who work at VITA are fully trained by the IRS or authorized agencies, and are up to date on important changes to the Income Tax Act. Call 1-800-829-1040 to learn more about VITA and find an office.
- TCE (Taxation Counseling for the Elderly) helps seniors understand all the benefits and obligations of their extended health care coverage, assisted care in the home, long-term care, and other tax questions. TCE volunteers also prepare income tax returns free for seniors, and can e-file them directly with the IRS for prompt refunds.
