2 Tips on Filling Out the VA Disability Form

When you are applying for a veterans disability benefit, you will need to fill out a VA disability form, and more likely several forms. In order to ensure that you do this correctly, you will first have to make sure that you get the right disability forms for your needs, and then fill them out correctly.

Be Prepared

The most important thing you can do before you begin filling in the form is preparation. Gather together all the things that you will need to make your application, including documents and proof of injury. You will need information such as your discharge sheet (to establish that it is non-dishonorable), and copies of your service records. If you are also claiming for dependents, you will need copies of your wedding certificate for a spouse, or a birth certificate for your child.

Fill in the Form Accurately

When you begin to fill in the form, start at the beginning by filling in your name, address, birth date, and other information. You should then fill in the next page of the form which requests information about your service record, and your discharge. You should also declare any forms of income, such as military retired pay, as these will affect the amount of compensation you can claim. Proceed from page to page, filling in every question, even if it is only to say N/A.
