Money-Saving Kitchen Remodeling to Upgrade your Home

Whether you're looking to furnish your house with a few upgrades to bring a prettier penny on the market or you simply wish to enjoy those improvements yourself, there's no doubt that giving the kitchen a facelift is one of the most effective means available to enhance your home's appeal. But, remodeling your kitchen can be a costly endeavor that could quickly gobble up tens of thousands of dollars before you know it. However, there are ways to achieve much of the effect that you're looking for, while saving a substantial amount of cash at the same time. By doing a goodly portion of the work yourself, both you bank account and you pride can maintain healthy balances. Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Make a budget for your project. The first thing to do is to decide just how much you're willing to spend by making a list of all the items you want to refurbish or completely change.
  • Instead of replacing kitchen cabinets, which can make a very hefty dent in your budget, you might consider just refinishing them and adding new hardware. The difference in cost can be amazing – and so can the look of your "new" cabinets.
  • Instead of hiring someone to paint your kitchen, do the job yourself and save hundreds dollars (or more).
  • New lighting fixtures will probably also make your list of upgrades. But these, too, can be very expensive to buy. Determine if you can modify the current fixtures you have by spray-painting them and installing energy-saving light bulbs. This will add a more modern 'feel' to your kitchen. Or, if your kitchen has a ceiling fan, it can be easily transformed into a new and more contemporary lighting fixture by refurbishing the blades or replacing them entirely with a different style. If you don't have a fan, consider putting one in – they're not terribly expensive, are simple to install and can make quite a statement.
  • If the kitchen sink needs replacing, perhaps a stainless steel sink with new, modern-style faucets will do the trick.
  • You may have been thinking of replacing your kitchen's countertop with tiles, which can be quite costly. Instead of the more expensive marble, why not install decorative ceramic tiles on the counter and backsplash? Again, very appealing – to both the eye and the pocketbook.
  • If you have wood flooring, you can easily refinish it or purchase vinyl floor tiles that will enhance the look of the cooking area.
  • New appliances will typically be on everyone's kitchen-remodeling list. Replacing the refrigerator and stove will necessarily be a significant part of your remodeling budget. If you're unhappy with your old appliances, check out the low-end stainless steel products that are available. They'll save you a good bit of money, and look quite attractive while doing so. But whatever new appliances you buy, make sure that they have an energy-efficiency certification.
  • If you need additional cabinet space, you can purchase a portable pantry closet and assemble it at home. They're relatively inexpensive and can usually also be painted or refinished to match your kitchen décor, if you desire.

You can have a kitchen that will turn heads, whether of potential buyers or of family and friends. Careful planning, budgeting and just a little elbow grease can make it happen – and you won't have to spend a king's ransom to do it.
