FEMA provides disaster assistance for families who have immediate needs as a result of a natural disaster. Hurricane season begins in the summer, and FEMA provides brochures and other information to help families prepare for potential emergency. If an emergency has occurred, you may be eligible for federal assistance.
Individuals and Households Program
This program helps with immediate and critical expenses you cannot meet after an emergency. The assistance will not cover property damage incurred from a hurricane. Further, the relief program will not cover expenses covered by your insurer. Business related losses are not covered with this type of assistance, but you may b eligible for an SBA loan for disaster assistance to help your business recover; this loan must be repaid.
Assistance Available
Repair: FEMA will help cover uncovered losses to make your home safe and sanitary
Replacement: FEMA will help replace a total loss if it is not covered by insurance
Housing construction: FEMA may provide assistance in building a new home in a few remote areas, but this assistance is very limited
Necessary expenses: If you have been injured, become ill or require other immediate needs as a result of the disaster you may be eligible for some assistance through FEMA
