While it can be an unpleasant experience, it is a necessary part of living in a civilized society. Car insurance protects your assets and can get you back in the condition you were in before a wreck took place. Therefore, dealing with the claim in an appropriate manner is important. Although car insurance claims tend to drag on, there are a few things that you can do to speed them along as much as possible.
Report the Claim Immediately
One mistake that many drivers make is when they do not report the claim immediately. When something happens that will eventually involve the insurance company, you need to report it right away. First of all, leaving the scene of an accident is a crime. Even if it is small accident only involving you, you should call them and let them know right away. This makes the investigation of the claim go quicker as the information is still fresh. If they want to question anything, it will be much easier for them to get the information they need when the wreck is still recent.
Tell the Truth
When you report a claim, sometimes you are scared to tell the insurance company exactly what happened. If the wreck was your fault, you want to try and shift part of the blame to someone else. While you might think that you can save some money on premiums this way, it is much better to tell the truth. The penalty for insurance fraud is much worse than the little amount that you will save on premiums. With all of the technology available now including cameras at almost every intersection, the truth will almost always come out. If they have to investigate the claim, it will take even longer than it should.
Do What They Tell You
When you report the claim, do what the claim rep on the other end of the phone tells you to do. Many times, people will just automatically take their car to their favorite mechanic without being told to do so. Sometimes, the insurance company will want to send a claim rep out immediately to look at the accident. If not, they will probably have a certain repair shop that they want you to take your car to. They have these systems in place to make things go smoothly and to treat you fairly. If you do things out of order, it could slow down the process that they have in place.
Check With the Adjuster
Insurance adjusters sometimes have a lot of claims to deal with. Depending on claim volume, the amount of time it takes to settle your claim could be long or short. Adjusters are human too and sometimes they get sidetracked. Just give them a call periodically to check up on the status of the claim. If they know you want to settle quickly, they will often move your claim to the front of the stack.
