Inexpensive Family Fun

The vast majority of the fun we have today seems to be based on money – that is, spending it. Take a cruise, visit Europe, or escape for a week on a trip across the country. Although there's nothing wrong with these activities, you can also have fun with the family and still spend a whole lot less money.

With the current pinch on money that just about all of us feels, we're being forced to find our leisure and entertainment through more frugal means. But this isn't necessarily a bad thing; we should embrace the notion of cultivating more inexpensive ways to have fun with our kids. Here are a few ideas that you might like.

Many children enjoy learning about animals. On weekends when there's nothing to do, visit the local science center or zoo. Zoos are relatively inexpensive and you can often get season passes. Museums and science centers may offer yearly memberships that entitle family members to visit as many times as they want for a low price. Members also enjoy discounts in the gift shop.

Kids typically want to be outdoors with the sun in their face. As long as they can play and get some air they don't always care what they do. This is a perfect time to visit the local swimming pool or, if you live close enough, spend a day at the beach. You might even consider installing a pool of your own. No, we're not talking about an in-ground model – remember the subject of this article? Quick set-up pools can be purchased for surprisingly little money, and they'll pay for themselves after just a few eighty-five-degree weekends. Both you and the kids can relax and cool off anytime you want to.

Further, if you have a big back yard, set it up for some games. You can play volleyball, badminton, kickball, and dodge ball – just to name a few. Bringing back a few memories? These games are fun and get the 'ole blood circulating, which means that they're good exercise. Invite your friends and family over for a cookout and make a great day of it.

Many cities offer free or inexpensive activities downtown at various times during the year. In the winter, there are Christmas concerts and parades. Parades may also take place during the summer season – along with carnivals, fairs, art exhibits, and cook-offs. Music festivals showcase local talent and have good foods and crafts. All of these ideas are inexpensive and held locally. Kids get to explore new places in their own city and have a great time doing it.

Rainy days are also good for inexpensive family fun. Have a movie day or a pizza night where everyone gets to make their own pizza pie. Art is a wonderful way to pass the time when it's gloomy out. Turn the kitchen table into an art studio with watercolors, crayons, and craft supplies. Let all of the creations dry overnight and display them the next day.

You see? Family fun and events don't have to be expensive. Taking an occasional trip is fine, but more than once a year could make your finances wish that you hadn't. For more frequent fun, put some of these ideas to good use.
