Phishing schemers get a hold of your personal information by providing you with a site that is not linked to the company. In order to protect your confidential information, you can make sure the address bar of your website contains the legitimate URL address of the company.
Also, the Better Business Bureau website will post information about fraudulent companies and display warnings about past fraudulent activities.
