5 Tips To Get Out of Credit Card Debt

If you are hoping to get out of credit card debt, there are certain actions that you can take immediately. There are several tips that can help you reduce the amount of money that you owe, and ultimately help you to pay off all of your debt. Learning how to consolidate and use discipline in your credit usage are important factors. Consider these five tips to help you get out of credit card debt.

Tip #1. Stop or reduce your credit card usage.

In order to lower the revolving balances on your credit card accounts, you need to stop charging them. Use cash as much as possible, and limit your credit card usage to predictable billing and/or emergencies. Luxury expenses should be paid out of pocket to reduce the chances of spending more than you have.

Tip #2. Consolidate your credit card bills.

There are two ways that you can consolidate your bills. You can apply for a debt consolidation loan or you can transfer balances to one or two credit cards that have higher limits. Be sure that, in either case, your interest rate will be lower than it is currently so that you will be able to pay down the principal debt sooner. Make the payments on time, and if you are using the balance transfer option, pay more than the minimum whenever possible.

Tip #3. Set a time limit on paying off your bills.

Figure out how much of your monthly income you will be able to put towards paying down your current level of debt. Determine how long it should take you to get out of credit card debt by paying this amount every month. Then add three to six months to this number to take into account interest charges and emergencies. Make sure that you pay enough each month to be debt free by the specified date.

Tip #4. Negotiate with the creditors.

You can call the credit card company and explain that you are having financial difficulties and you need a lower interest rate. If you have a credit protection plan, you can have your payments deferred until you have more cash flow, and in some cases have your balance lowered. Communicating before your account is late or delinquent is best.

Tip #5. Cut back on luxury expenses.

Subscriptions, dining out, paid online memberships, and impulse shopping can add to credit cards. Cancel the reoccurring charges that you don't need, at least until you get out of credit card debt. Discipline yourself not to spend money that you don't have by only taking your a debit card with you when you go to the mall, or skip the extra shopping trips all together.
